Position Summary:
The Publications Specialist’s primary responsibility is to expand and enhance the Monitor’s digital presence partnering with Director of Publications, the Monitor team, Publisher, and ASA’s Marketing team. This includes developing effective messaging to promote content in all channels, i.e., eNewsletters, alerts, websites, social media, and multimedia initiatives, and ensuring timely posting. In addition, the Specialist will copyedit articles and check proofs to ensure the Monitor style guide is maintained. Other projects include working with the Director of Publications to assist in planning and executing other elements of the ASA Publications strategy.
Position Responsibilities:

  • Expand and enhance the Monitor’s digital presence to grow audience. Develop compelling messaging to promote Monitor content within ASA and Publisher channels, i.e. eNewsletters, alerts, umbrella and home page, social media, and multimedia initiatives. Ensure posting is timely; update static pages regularly and blog pages when available. Develop planning mechanism to share at department meetings and with Editor-in-Chief (EIC).
  • Copyedit Monitor articles and check proofs to ensure the Monitor style guide is adhered to. Maintain Monitor style guide as a living document partnering with Managing Editor to ensure editorial and design style guide changes are documented.
  • Partner with Director of Publications, Publisher, Managing Editor and ASA’s marketing team to develop, monitor and execute the Monitor’s social media program. Monitor and evaluate engagement. Develop planning mechanism to share at department meetings and EIC. Set up social media ambassador program partnering with the most social engaged Monitor board members.
  • Partner with the Director of Publications, Publisher, Managing Editor and ASA’s marketing team to develop, execute, and monitor effectiveness the Monitor’s multimedia program. Currently multimedia includes the podcast program but in future this may be extended. Develop planning mechanism to share at department meetings and with EIC.
  • Work closely with the Managing Editor and Publications Coordinator to compile and deploy the eNewsletters (Anesthesiology Today and ASAP) accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Partner with the Director of Publications and work closely with the Publications team to plan Monitor activities at the Annual Meeting.
  • Work with Managing Editor and Director of Publications to develop plan to integrate Monitor content within ASA’s overall digital strategy.
  • Alongside Director of Publications and other ASA leadership, work on activities related to ASA’s publications strategy initiatives as directed.
  • Work closely with the Publications Coordinator to ensure accuracy and currency of editorial office process documentation. Be able to step in to fulfill any publications department task when necessary.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience, including copyediting and copy development.
  • Knowledge of digital communications with exposure to digital and social networking technologies (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, web videos, blogging, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently; proven project management skills and ability to work within established parameters using own judgment and related work experience in executing responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and to plan effectively to avoid problems.
  • Knowledge of AMS/LMS/online publishing platform/website/e-communications platform would be helpful.
  • Professionalism, good judgment, and ability to interact with all levels of staff, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
