Position Summary:
The Anesthesiology Digital Communications Specialist partners with journal editors, staff, and authors to coordinate the production of high-quality and engaging journal digital, social media and multimedia content. This position works closely with the Managing Editor, editors and authors and will coordinate development and production with multiple vendors. The Anesthesiology Digital Communications Specialist will help editors grow the journal digital and social media creative portfolio.
 
Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Serve as journal social media expert, working in conjunction with and as directed by the journal social media ambassadors and editors, to enhance and enlarge the social media profile (will set annual goals on increasing # followers; # of posts per week/month).
 
  • Coordinate monthly social media posts with hashtags when received from social media editors; schedule and post to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook using Hootsuite and/or other tools; monitor social media channels retweeting/reposting mentions of Anesthesiology. Quality check all posts for accuracy of content and display of graphics and adjust as necessary.
 
  • Perform a weekly review of the latest Altmetric results for the journal and highlight high performing manuscripts appearing in tweets, news media, or other venues. Use the Altmetric reports to identify material to retweet or post on Facebook or Instagram to grow the social media reach for the journal.
 
  • Monitor activities of Social Media Ambassadors. Onboard and train new ambassadors as necessary.
  • Coordinate distribution of weekly featured article alerts and online first alerts including drafting of special messaging and approving alerts prior to distribution; ensuring accuracy and as necessary updating the templated copy in journal alerts.
 
  • Work with Managing Editor and Director of Publications to integrate Anesthesiology content within ASA’s overall digital strategy (e.g., ASAP, Monitor, ASAHQ.org, and ASA e-communications).
  • Coordinate the scheduling, recording, production, and posting of the Editor-In-Chief monthly podcast and featured article podcasts. Work closely with medical writer and the Editor-In-Chief on monthly podcast production. Coordinate foreign language translations of monthly EIC podcast for posting in conjunction with the monthly issue. Schedule recordings for 2 Featured Article podcasts per month. Post podcasts to Libsyn for feeds to journal website, iTunes, etc. according to agreed-upon schedule. Provide podcast metrics on a monthly basis.
  • Update “self-serve” pages on journal website as directed by the Managing Editor including the Editorial Board page, Instructions for Authors, About the Journal, Journal Staff and Contacts. Build and maintain new self-service pages as needed.
 
  • Responsible for monitoring journal homepage daily and reporting any rendering issues; quality checking podcast and video postings on journal website and troubleshooting any rendering issues.
 
  • Responsible for updating the Author Resource Center with new information as it becomes available, ensuring the most current information is posted.
  • Work with Wolters Kluwer (WK) marketing to develop material and format for ad hoc website pages such as the Covid-19 collection.
 
  • Responsible for creating and keeping track of service requests for the journal web platform.
  • Identify, measure and report on social media and multimedia analytics. Report on social media output and highlights to the Managing Editor monthly in preparation for monthly meeting with WK and the Editor-In-Chief.
  • Work with ASA graphics designers and potential 3rd party vendors to coordinate visual abstract production for up to 10 articles a month for inclusion in social media and submission to production for inclusion in online journal; traffic multiple drafts between graphic design team(s) and journal Visual Team of the editorial board.
  • Coordinate development of monthly video abstract once article is identified by Assistant EIC. Connect author with Video abstract partner company and coordinate video abstract production. Post video to Brightcove and send link to WK for inclusion in article xml. Add video to Journal’s playlist on YouTube.
  • Coordinate creation of monthly infographic column working with editors and graphic artist on development; coordinating online publication with WK and via social media.
  • Quality check ASA Monitor social media posts and alert copy for accuracy of content as needed.
  • Stay up to date with changes in all social platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness.
  • Partner with Editorial team and publisher to creatively identify new communications products and opportunities for publications (journal and ASA Monitor) content creation and dissemination.
  • Attend and participate in journal Editorial Board and/or strategy meetings to discuss achievements, goals, and enhancements; prepare presentation materials as needed
 
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in English or Journalism.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in a publications or communications environment; preferably with a peer-reviewed medical journal.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience publishing/proofreading/copyediting for print and/or electronic publishing.
  • Knowledge of digital communications with exposure to digital and social networking technologies (i.e., Facebook, Instagram Twitter, YouTube, web videos, blogging, etc.) and assessment tools (i.e., Altmetrics) required. Social media reporting experience is very desirable.
  • Experience working with website hosting platforms, website updating, and html/xml is highly desirable.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, demonstrating confidence and poise with a strong member service orientation.
  • Ability to work cross departmentally and collaboratively. Act as a bridge between staff members and volunteers.
  • Ability to manage large-scale projects from start to finish, maintains high level of organization and ability to multi-task effectively, managing overlapping projects. Strong follow-through to meet deadlines.
  • Acts independently and in accordance with guidelines established by the department director.
