Position Summary:
The AQI Director of Operations will serve as a key member of the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI) team reporting to the AQI Executive Director. Responsibilities include:

  • The AQI Director of Operations is responsible for the operation of the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI), a 501(c) (3) non-profit with three Anesthesia data registries; National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry (NACOR), Anesthesia Incident Reporting System (AIRS) and the Anesthesia Closed Claims Program.
  • Under the leadership of the AQI Executive Director, CEO and AQI Board of Directors, the AQI Director of Operations contributes to the formation, and is responsible for the execution of AQI’s strategic and business plans, ensuring the established goals are met or exceeded.  This includes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the AQI and its registries, including, but not limited to staff leadership, vendor and customer relationship management and regulatory reporting and compliance.
  • Working with a variety of stakeholders, the AQI Director acts in the role of product manager for the three data registries, understanding the opportunities for regulatory requirements of Anesthesia practices in the area of Quality Improvement, Quality Reporting, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Payment Incentive Plans (MIPS), and MIPS Value Pathways (MVP). The AQI Director works with a broad array of stakeholders to direct registry features, pricing, marketing, sales enrollment, invoicing, data submissions to meet the marketplace needs.
  • The AQI Director of Operations maintains a broad and current understanding of best practices in Medical Quality Improvement, CMS MIPS and MVP programs, the medical registry marketplace, registry operations, EHR and AIMS systems and data analytics.
  • The AQI Director of Operations collaborates closely with the ASA Quality Division to support development, maintenance and testing of Anesthesia Quality Measures that support quality reporting and advancement of patient safety in settings involving the practice of anesthesiology.
 
Primary Position Responsibilities:
  • Implements strategies and tracks departmental goals that support the AQI strategic plan and business goals. Ensures the successful implementation of approved initiatives. Drives departmental excellence and identifies and implements best practices.
  • Responsible for product management and operations of data registries for anesthesiologists based on strategic direction from the AQI Executive Director and AQI Board.  Includes oversight of product features, performance, business development, contracting, and partner/customer relationship management within operations to deliver value and a world-class user experience for customers.
  • Provides leadership, management and supervision to AQI staff, modeling ASA core values, developing, mentoring staff, supporting and organizing AQI staff.
  • In coordination with Quality and Registry Affairs, oversees the maintenance and development of informative and innovative practice educational materials for NACOR and CMS reporting.
  • Seeks business opportunities to support the AQI across ASA departments, including Quality and Regulatory Affairs, Center for Perioperative Medicine, Education and Meetings.
  • Liaison to AQI board and assigned committees. Responsibilities include drafting meeting agendas, coordinating meetings and conference calls, drafting agendas, drafting, and distributing summation reports, tracking follow-ups, assisting with developing and monitoring the committee budget, and ensuring annual reports are complete. Work with the chair to assure the business of the committee is accurately recorded and placed on the agenda(s) of the appropriate oversight committee, council, or Board. Develop and maintain knowledge of the committee’s area of expertise and work effectively and cooperatively with volunteers.
  • Establishes and adheres to budgets and overall finances of the AQI.
  • Ensures yearly adoption and operationalizing of CMS reporting requirements and maintenance of Patient Safety Organization (PSO) status.
  • Oversees response to research requests for access to registries for research purposes, while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations with respect to the AQI’s Patient Safety Organization (PSO) and 501(c)(3) status.
  • Establishes and monitors data warehouse and operations key performance indicators.
 
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH), or other relevant advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience required, some clinical and/or IT experience helpful.
  • Minimum of 3 years of senior managerial or director experience in a related function.
  • Experience in planning, developing and maintaining a medical data registry.  Experience engaging with EHR vendors and medical billing companies to facilitate input and output of data into registries.
  • Extensive experience working and collaborating with a variety of organizations in the areas of performance measurement, quality improvement, or data analysis.  Technology savvy and comfortable with dashboards and analytics.
  • Familiarity with the CMS Quality Payment Program (QPP), Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), and their regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Understanding of data warehouse, registry consultants and other registries providers in the medical specialty space.
  • Experience in operations and management of an organization, preferably a 501(c)(3) organization preferred. Additional experience in managing and interacting with volunteer members.
  • Project management training and/or certification a plus.
  • Effective communication with multiple audiences using a variety of formats, including written communications clearly outlining issues and action items, oral presentations and briefings to staff, Boards of Directors and outside organizations, and meeting management.
