Scott Tillema, Police Lieutenant |TEDx|Negotiation Instructor
At this Leadership Luncheon Scott will talk about his time as a hostage negotiator and the lessons to take from it. He will also introduce his model of hostage negotiation, and how it can be adapted by those in the private sector to improve communication, culture building and leadership. He will be discussing with attendees how they can use the skills of hostage negotiators to perform at their best under pressure and bring greater value to their personal and professional lives.
Scott Tillema is a lieutenant with the Schaumburg Police Department and has been a police officer with Schaumburg since 2002. Currently, he serves as the department’s coordinator of training and emergency services. Lieutenant Tillema is a FBI trained hostage negotiator, having spent over 7 years with the largest multi-jurisdictional municipal SWAT team in the United States, and is a nationally recognized speaker in the field of police hostage and crisis negotiations.
Educationally, Lieutenant Tillema holds a master’s degree in psychology and has received negotiation training at Harvard University and IMD Business School. In addition to his work in Schaumburg, he is a faculty member with the Schranner Negotiation Institute, providing negotiation instruction to clients in both the U.S. and Europe, and was recently named as a trainer for the Hostage & Crisis Negotiation International Academy.
