Overcoming Obstacles in Business & Life
How your leadership and networking skills shift throughout the years to make you who you are today, and how you differentiate yourself from the crowd.
Betsy Skibinski
I taught High School English, Drama and Speech at Fremd for 2 years; I substitute taught for 5 years in High School Districts 211 & 214. After getting divorced and raising to little kids alone, I had 10 interviews to get my first sales job..only working with and working for men…becoming a sales trainer and then got top Sales Person of the year nationally out of 600 men. 10 interviews because the one obstacle was that I had kids. The obstacles were huge…learning how to sell, product knowledge, how to negotiate with national accounts (Kmart, Target, Walmart etc). When I became a Dir. Of Sales for a camera company, I was still the only woman in the board room and 30 men reported to me. As your type of career changes and you age, your obstacles change and need to be adjusted plus you also gather a lot of stories to share and I have lots of relatable stories. Just entering a room with a lot of people can be an obstacle but there are a lot of tools to be learned from experience. So many more ideas.
In addition to finding the nuggets within some people to create a win for them, I have had experience speaking before 1,000 people to a handful of people at an event. Presented at a Jazzercise National Instructor’s Meeting wearing a tool belt and asking them to use the tools within the organization to create a win win. Spoke to 1,000 people at a national camera convention about moving through the “clutter” to achieve goals. And most recently, for the past 6 years speaking before Rotary Clubs, Knights of Columbus, Lions Clubs, Retirement Homes and any other place that would give me a donation for the Alzheimer’s Association.
We are all faced with obstacles but how do we address them to be true to ourselves to move on????
