Position Summary:
The role of the Education Executive is to build and maintain a portfolio of learning-based products and other member-oriented resources that: 1) ensure ASA members and the broader physician-led anesthesia care team have access to the best possible educational offerings that support clinical excellence, patient safety and practice improvement; and 2) prepare ASA members to assume roles of increasing leadership responsibility within departments of anesthesiology and health systems, overall. The Executive will lead a highly effective team and will be charged with partnering with physician leaders, committees, internal departments and external organizations to develop and implement strategies for achieving ASA’s strategic vision and mission through live meetings, online educational offerings and other formats as needed. The Executive will bring innovative leadership to the department, assuring staff are appropriately trained in the use of instructional design methods and education content delivery consistent with regulatory/certification requirements (i.e. ACCME, ACGME, etc.) and be comfortable working with members in designing and implementing learning opportunities.
 
Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains strategic oversight of ASA’s educational curriculum and associated activities that foster high quality evidence-based medicine, use of standards and performance metrics in clinical practice and assessments that, collectively, support participants in improving their clinical-decision making, impacting health policy, and enhancing their leadership in anesthesiology, critical care, and health care systems.
  • Positions the ASA education program to maintain ACCME accreditation along with other regulatory and/or certification requirements as necessary. Correlates education activities with MOCA part II and IV requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology and CME mandates by state licensing. Ensures that ASA remains the educational home for its members.
  • Facilitates a team culture that focuses on supporting staff in developing and growing in the competencies of the continuing medical education professional. Builds day-to-day standardization, operations and improvement in work flow processes.
  • Collaborates with senior executive leadership on corporate and business development opportunities, establishing new business collaborations and partnerships, executing on educational grant opportunities, and collaborating on educational opportunities for ASA’s channel partners. Strives to achieve business and budgetary goals.
  • Collaborates closely with the Vice President of Scientific Affairs, Chair/Section on Education, committee chairs, and other ASA leadership on the development of educational and leadership offerings. Participates in a variety of committee and leadership meetings, communications and reports, budget development and monthly dashboard updates.
  • Collaborates with external partners (ACHE, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, etc.) to ensure that ASA’s educational offerings are developed and launched successfully, including building and expanding on ASA’s best-in-class Leadership Development portfolio of products.
Position Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Education, Curriculum Development, Education Design, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Organizational Development, Business or related field required.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively more responsible management experience in developing and directing education programs and departments for professionals, including for physician groups. Medical association or non-profit experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of ACCME requirements required.
  • Experience in seeking opportunities for and managing grants, including writing interim and final outcomes reports.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing institution-wide education strategies aligned with organizational mission.
  • Expertise in knowledge/learning management systems, organizational learning, and technology to design, manage and deliver education programs, along with staff management, and fiscal management.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership traits of credibility, creativity, innovation, tolerance for ambiguity, flexibility in leadership style and interpersonal skills that provide strategic direction and support for staff.
  • A transformational leader who can successfully oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive learning strategy using a multitude of formats and offerings.
